Concrete Mixer Maintenance Tips: 6 Steps to Hassle-Free Mixing
Maximise the lifespan of your concrete mixer by following these 6 top tips from our mixing technology experts:
1. Follow the manufacturers maintenance guidelines.
It sounds simple, but many issues can be avoided by simply reading the manual and following its advice! Pay particular attention to information on servicing intervals, oil changes, inspection checklists, correct operation, cleaning and storage.
2. Daily cleaning is a must!
It’s crucial to clean your mixer after every use. Hardened concrete can make it difficult to operate your mixer and damage valuable components. Using a high-pressure mixer washout system, like the Rapid Jetwash, makes concrete mixer cleaning fast and effective. To clean your mixer, first switch it off from its power source. Next, hose down any residual concrete, letting the water run for a few minutes. Then, using a high-pressure lance, spray the inside of the mixer, washing the floor and wall tiles, paddles, arms and discharge chute. Scrape off any remaining concrete with a shovel, brush or scraper. Finally, drain the water via the discharge door.
3. Lubricate moving parts.
It’s vital to keep your mixer well-lubricated to reduce friction, wear, and tear, and prevent rust and corrosion. You should lubricate the bearings, gears, belts, and seals of your concrete mixer. Be sure to use the recommended type and amount of lubricant for your model and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t forget to regularly check the lubricant level and quality and replace it when necessary.
4. Daily inspections.
It’s best to follow the manufactures guidelines in terms of inspection. As a general rule, you should inspect your mixer, including motor, belts and electrical components for damage before and after each use. Damage can occur for many reasons, including, accidents, misuse, or normal wear and tear. It’s important to look for signs such as cracks, dents, holes, loose bolts/connections, worn belts, leaks, unusual noises, vibrations or smells. If you find any damage, you should repair it promptly or contact your manufacturer for advice. It’s a good idea to keep a record of any repairs or component replacements you make to your concrete mixer.
5. Store it correctly.
Don’t forget to store your mixer in a dry, covered and secure environment to prevent rust/corrosion and theft or vandalism. When installing your mixer, ensure it is placed on a flat, level and sturdy base.
6. Ensure proper training and operation.
Follow the manufacturers operational guidelines at all times and ensure all operators have been properly trained. Having the mixer operated by a trained and experienced operator reduces the chance of misuse and overloading which could greatly increase maintenance costs and shorten the mixer’s service life.
