Featured Gulf Atlantic Project: Barnard Construction, C-44 Reservoir/soil cement slope protection

Gulf Atlantic, in partnership with RWC Equipment Leasing, recently supplied Barnard Construction with a customised equipment solution for a South Florida environmental project.

The reservoir project, which is scheduled to be completed this year and will span 3,400 acres and run 15ft deep, will prevent the Southern Indian River lagoon region from being inundated with freshwater and pollutants.

Having previously worked with Barnard Construction on a range of environmental and remediation projects, Gulf Atlantic seamlessly supplied the company with two Rapidmix 400CW mobile continuous mixing plants, six cement storage pigs and several portable radial stacking conveyors for production of 400,000 yds3 of soil cement to construct the reservoir’s embankment.

Commenting on the project, Steve Kidd – Project Manager, Barnard Construction, said,

What problem were you trying to solve with our equipment and services?

“We were looking for a plant that was easy to setup, tear down, and mobilize to multiple locations without the use of a crane, yet was large enough to produce the volume of soil cement for our project.”

What features sold you on leasing/buying our equipment (specifically, the Rapidmix plants)?

“The Rapidmix 400CW plant had a good balance of production, mobility, and belt scales, which best fit our project needs. Portability was huge, but production was as important. We needed equipment that was small and portable but still able to produce high volumes like larger plants. We’ve used larger plants before, but they require one or two cranes to setup and tear down. Rapidmix was able to maximize production, but a crane wasn’t needed and we were able to move the plant around.”

What were you able to achieve with the soil cement production equipment provided?

“With the use of two Rapidmix 400CW plants we were able to produce over 300,000 cubic yards of soil cement, which was used for upstream erosion protection for the embankment of the C-44 Reservoir. We produced almost 400,000 cubic yards from the two plants over 18 months. That wasn’t even fulltime; we had some breaks and mobilized to three different locations at that site during that time. For how small the plants are, they pack a punch. There are a lot of moving parts in a small package, but they work very efficiently. On our end, we had to have weigh scales on the belt to track the accuracy of the plant. A lot of other plants don’t have weigh scales – you set it and hope everything goes right. But with these plants you could know in real time if there was an issue with the plant and address it before the material gets out to the placement area.”
